Shunkashuto ~ The Heartbeat of Japan: A Seasonal Journey ~
春夏秋冬 (Shunkashuto) ~ The Heartbeat of Japan: A Seasonal Journey ~ Tuesday, April 28th | 6 pm $25 Members | $35 Guests In Japan, the rhythm of life is guided by the seasons. The Heartbeat of Japan: A Seasonal Journey explores how the passage of time, marked by spring’s awakening, summer’s vitality, autumn’s reflection, and winter’s stillness, shapes Japanese culture, art, and ways of seeing the world. Seasons are not merely changes in weather, but also deeply embedded in Japanese thought, influencing aesthetics, rituals, and an awareness of life’s transience. Central to this worldview is the acceptance of change and the understanding that all moments are fleeting. This sensitivity, often described through the concept of mono no aware (the gentle awareness of impermanence), finds expression in art that celebrates beauty precisely because it does not last. Cherry blossoms that fall at their peak, crimson maple leaves that signal decline, or snow that briefly transforms the landscape all remind viewers that life moves in cycles of emergence, fullness, fading, and renewal. The exhibit brings together kimonos, ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and Japanese scrolls, each reflecting seasonal motifs and the cycle of life. Kimonos on view feature carefully chosen patterns and color—bamboo covered in snow for resilience in winter, rippling water and pale blue or green hues for summer, or autumn maple landscapes symbolizing maturity and transition—traditionally worn in harmony with the time of year. Ukiyo-e prints capture seasonal pleasures, from spring tea ceremonies, to catching fireflies in summer, grounding human life within the natural world. Painted and calligraphic scrolls further express the seasons through landscapes, poetry, and symbolic imagery, inviting quiet contemplation. Together, these objects reveal how Japanese art does not resist change but embraces it. The changing seasons mirror the human journey: birth, growth, aging, and return. By tracing this seasonal pulse across textiles, prints, and scrolls, The Heartbeat of Japan invites visitors to experience time as the Japanese have long understood it. Not as something to be conquered, but as a living cycle to be observed, honored, and felt. RSVP Today!
